The Michigan Water Polo Association (MWPA) has announced their week two District Players of the Week.
For a second week, not every District in the State had competition. Thus there will not be a full slate of eight Players of the Week.
Girls Water Polo
District 1 - Leah Green, #7 Grandville
Green, a first-year Varsity Starting keeper for the 7th ranked Grandville Bulldogs, knocked aside 15 shots in a 7-6 road loss to #2 ranked Rockford on Monday. Green also stuffed a pair of penalty shots, including one with 15 seconds remaining to give Mitch Fountain's Bulldogs a shot to play the ball up the pool for a late chance. Green added a steal with her 68.1% outing against the Rams, who she's 1-1 against this season.
District 2 - Josie Geers, #2 Rockford
Geers netted four of Rockford's seven tallies for a one-goal victory over #7 Grandville, who the Rams had fallen to just three days prior to open the 2021 season. Katie Clarin's Rams improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 against top-ten ranked teams this season. Geers wins Player of the Week honors for the Rams for the second straight week following Rylee Davis. In one game, Geers added five steals to boost the Rams to the State's best record on either side.
Boys Water Polo
District 1 - Garrett Barry, #5 Grand Haven
The former goaltender turned field player had himself a day in #5 Grand Haven's season opening 11-4 win over #10 East Grand Rapids. He became accustomed to finding the back of the net that used to sit straight across from him, as Barry tallied three times. Defensively he added three steals for Bill Hamm's Buccaneers. Barry also drew three exclusions and added an assist.
District 2 - Max Lashbrook, Mason/Grand Ledge
Amongst a group of high-achieving single game entrants, Lashbrook tied for the state lead in single game goals in a head-to-head with Lake Orion. Betsy Collins' Bulldogs fell 10-9, but Lashbrook's five goals matched his District 3 counterpart Dane Herrick in a back-and-forth affair. Lashbrook also had three steals, dished out a pair of assists and had a field block.
District 3 - Dane Herrick, Lake Orion
Dane Herrick was flat out FOOLING on April 1st. In his only action of the week, Herrick peppered the box score with five goals, five steals, four drawn exclusions, two assists, and two field blocks in a 10-9 win over Mason/Grand Ledge. Kevin Ott's Dragons are a boys' state best 2-0 overall this season with a 24-10 goal differential, and Herrick added big time to that mark.
